Whole Wheat Bread in 13 Steps

Classic Whole Wheat Bread

I never purchased bread from the store while raising my ten children due to obvious cost savings of making it at home.

However in todays age it's smart to make your own bread for health reasons.

Most store bought bread is filled with ingredients you can't even pronounce.

Bread should be simple and few ingredients;
any bread not made with simple and easy to understand ingredients is a corporate science project and not real food in my opinion.

Add enough flour that the dough no-longer sticks to the edges of the bowl. In total about 6.5–7 cups.

  1. Sprinkle yeast over warm water in large bowl and let sit for 10 minutes.
  2. After ten minutes, measure oil in 1/4 cup measure and add to yeast/water.
  3. Add 1/4 cup white sugar to yeast/water.
  4. Add 4 cups flour and mix well with mixer or by hand.
  5. In separate (small) bowl, add 1 cup flour with salt, mix well, add to dough.

  1. Knead for about 10 minutes, adding flour until dough is not sticky.
  2. Turn edges into the middle, place dough, rounded side up into a large greased bowl, cover with towel, let rise for 1 Hour
  3. After one hour, punch down and let rise for 1 Hour a second time.
  4. Grease and flour your loaf pans.

  1. After 2-hours (second rise) Preheat oven to 375°
  2. Half dough into two pieces in shape of loaves, pull edges to the underside and place in your prepared loaf pans (step 9).
  3. Let rise until doubled.
  4. Bake in preheated oven for 35—40 minutes.

Remove from oven and let cool on baking rack.

Warm bread goes well with butter alone. Add some jam or honey for sweetness.
